Winter Wonder Outdoors: Creating Christmas Nature Art with Flour and Natural Materials

Published on 21/10/2025 in Early Years

Taking creative activities outdoors at Christmas time can open up a whole new world of learning that isn’t always possible indoors, especially at this time of year. One of my favourite activities to spark joy and wonder from little ones is a stencils and flour activity done on the ground. It’s a simple yet engaging way to create art outdoors but includes that all important connection to nature and inspires plenty of imaginative thinking.

This activity is low cost and makes the most of using materials that are in nature or already in your stock cupboard which is perfect for this time of year when there is a huge emphasis on purchasing gifts, food and decorations.

You will need:

What to do:

  1. Collect nature items such as leaves, pinecones and twigs.

  2. Find a flat part of the ground and clear away any leaves/sticks etc…

  3. Lay the stencil onto the ground.

  4. Hold the sieve over the stencil and put a little flour into it. Gently shake over the stencil to cover it.

  5. Slowly lift the stencil away to reveal the Christmas image.

  6. Use the nature finds to decorate the flour images.

Once the images are finished, you could take photographs of the children’s nature art and stick them to folded card to make beautiful Christmas cards.

Head outdoors

Whilst this activity could be done indoors, taking it outdoors enhances both the experience and the learning involved. Being outdoors allows children to have freedom of movement. They can move their whole bodies in a larger space when creating their art which in turn supports their gross motor skills and coordination. By engaging with nature, children can experience the textures, sights and sounds of the winter season and handle the nature finds, giving them a sensory experience. There is also the positive of worrying less about the mess. Children can experiment with sprinkling the flour confidently as it does not need to be cleaned away afterwards.

Sensory experience

Creating the flour nature images outdoors helps to stimulate the senses:

Touch: Feeling the different textures of nature and the consistency of the flour. Enjoying the coldness of the temperature around them when exposed to the fresh air in winter.

Sight: Looking into the distance when choosing their nature finds and at all of the different sights. Watching as the flour and stencils form an image on the ground.

Sound: As this is a quiet and mindful activity, listening carefully when outdoors can provide a calming experience as the flour is sprinkled and leaves crunch underfoot when walking.

Smell: The scent of the outdoors in winter is a different experience to being indoors with many other children. Breathe in the scents of the outdoor area such as the cool, crisp air or the trees and leaves.

Physical Development

Fine motor skills are enhanced through using the sieve and flour and placing small nature items onto their art with their hands. Gross motor skills are developed through bending down, reaching up to collect nature and holding their bodies still as they sieve the flour over the stencils.

Communication and Language

Children will engage in conversations about their image and what it represents such as a frosty snowflake or an exciting stocking full of toys. The activity also provides the opportunity to use descriptive vocabulary when creating their images.

Understanding the World

As children are creating their art, the world around them can have an impact on the outcome such as a gust of wind or raindrops falling onto it. This in turn, helps children to understand the different forces in nature and the effect it can have on things.

Expressive Arts and Design

The flour nature art is a great way to introduce children to a range of materials and textures when creating. The children will use nature to represent different elements of their art and work through the process.

Outdoor festive activities such as flour stencil art spark creativity but also give the children an appreciation of the natural world around them. As it is much colder in winter, heading outdoors can be limited in time but this simple activity can remind them that being outdoors and experiencing nature in all weather is just as much fun.
