Are you ready to Build a Grief Literate School?
Lessons in Loss® has been created to help primary schools move beyond waiting until a child is bereaved or experiencing significant loss before conversations about grief begin.
It provides a progressive approach to grief education from Early Years to Year 6, bringing together whole-class learning, staff training, targeted interventions and practical pastoral support within one whole-school subscription.
The curriculum supports primary schools in meeting the new statutory Relationships and Health Education expectations around change, loss, bereavement and grief, while providing a progressive approach that develops children's understanding as they move through school.
Through age-appropriate stories, texts, discussion and activities, children explore different experiences of grief, loss and change. The learning develops as they move through primary school, helping children build the language, understanding and confidence to talk about experiences that are a natural part of life.
Alongside whole-class learning, CPD-certified staff training helps the adults around children develop their own understanding of grief and feel more confident having conversations that can sometimes feel difficult.
When a child needs additional support, schools can draw on specialist resources, including extracts and activities from our children's journals and Adult Support Guides. These provide practical tools for targeted interventions, one-to-one work and wider pastoral support.
This creates a joined-up approach: teaching children about grief proactively, developing the confidence of the adults around them, and providing additional support when a child needs it.
Lessons in Loss® also continues to grow. New primary curriculum lessons, training modules, stories, activities, videos and specialist resources are added throughout the year, allowing your school's approach to grief education to grow too.

Building Grief Literate Schools
Grief is part of life, yet children are often first introduced to it when they are already experiencing a significant loss. Building Grief Literate Schools is about changing that.
By introducing grief education progressively from Early Years, developing staff knowledge and providing targeted support when it is needed, primary schools can create communities where grief is better understood, conversations feel more natural and children know there are trusted adults they can turn to.
We believe grief education should be part of that preparation too.
Children shouldn't have to experience a significant loss before they are given the language and understanding to talk about grief.
Lessons in Loss® introduces these conversations gently and progressively through whole-class grief education, while developing staff knowledge and confidence and providing targeted interventions and specialist resources for children who need more individual support.
This isn't about teaching children how they should grieve. It is about helping them understand that grief, loss and change are part of life; that grief is individual; and that it is something we can talk about.
