What is a Montessori classroom?
The Montessori method was pioneered in the early 1900s by leading Italian physician Maria Montessori. The Montessori method is child-centred. It focuses on physical, emotional, mental, spiritual and social ways of being. It’s more commonly seen in early years classrooms. In a Montessori classroom, children learn to do tasks for themselves and explore materials of their choice. Often this is achieved with independent activities that encourage hands-on learning and collaborative play.
